Did the broch of Mousa have a roof? - and why not!

Modern archaeologists regard brochs as the manor houses of important landowners. So they assume that they had roofs. Since the 18th century, however, some scholars have wondered if brochs had other purposes, and have speculated that they might have been roofless.

Archivist Brian Smith will be looking at the broch of Mousa. Using a wide variety of records and illustrations he will ask how it could possibly have had a roof.

His lecture will throw new light on the problem of the brochs in Shetland – and on how and why the broch of Mousa was built.

Auditorium doors open at 6.30pm for a 7.00pm start.

Booking is required. Tickets are priced £3.00 (+ booking fee) and are available online by clicking here or from Shetland Museum and Archives reception. Call 01595 741562 to book by telephone.
