Celebrating Volunteers' Week

We are delighted to celebrate volunteers' week (1 - 7 June) and take time out to thank our fantastic volunteers Mike and Jenny.

Mike and Jenny have worked with us continually for 5 years (but oh how we missed them during the lockdown!). They come to the store one day a week to assist the curators with their collections work. Jenny has the challenging task of rolling hundreds of our flat textiles including Christening shawls, Tattit rugs, stoles and scarves. She treats each unique piece with great care and a lot of patience. She is a professional for sure!

We don’t know what we would do without Mike and Jenny’s help and friendship. They are simply amazing.

Mike is an archaeology enthusiast who loves Shetland’s rich archaeology collection so he spends one day a week meticulously recording boxes of prehistoric pottery, part of the Old Scatness assemblage. He checks each box to see that its contents match the finds list and then registers them into the Museum database. This is important so that researchers can access any sherd of pottery they wish to see, and there are thousands! Mile has processed around 400 boxes with another year’s worth still to do. Thankfully Mike has the patience of a saint!
