Boats sought for 2017 display

Organisers of Shetland Boat Week are beginning preparations for next year’s event with an appeal to the public for potential boats to be included in one of several displays planned during the maritime festival.

The first Shetland Boat Week, held in August this year, saw a small collection of boats from a number of different builders and owners, all with a particular story to tell. This will continue in the 2017 event with more focus on different themes

Event co-ordinator, Emma Miller, said “We would like to extend the display element of the festival for 2017 with more traditional Shetland boats on display for folk to see. This was really popular last year with a lot of interest shown in the small number of boats we had. We know that there are so many more out there that could really illustrate the development of the Shetland model boat and it would be great to get these out of sheds and into the public eye.”

There are many different types of Shetland model and the Committee are keen to theme displays to show the variety and quality of these vessels. Anyone who has a Shetland model boat is invited to submit details of their vessel for consideration. All applications will be considered on merit and will take into account the builder, age and provenance of the craft.

Application forms can be requested from the Shetland Amenity Trust office in Garthspool by calling 01595 694688 or emailing info@shetlandamenity.org. Forms can also be completed online at www.shetlandboatweek.com/events.

Applications should be submitted before Monday 9th January 2017.
