Adult Learning - Individuals

Lifelong Learning staff, curators and visiting lecturers and artists provide a range of adult learning events through the year. See our Events Calendar for details of upcoming events.

Guided Tours and Demonstrations

During the summer months, a comprehensive programme of tours is planned.Visitor Services Assistants provide free gallery tours on subjects such as ‘Textile Treasures’ and ‘Museum Highlights’. Tours are free of charge, with additional subjects often offered to compliment touring exhibitions in Da Gadderie or Foyer areas. Demonstrations of spinning or knitting may also be offered during events such as Shetland Wool Week.

Talks and Lectures

Lectures are regularly scheduled in the Auditorium to coincide with new exhibitions or special projects. Events such as the UK Maritime Conference, Shetland Wool Week or the Viking Congress also generate public lecture programmes. Details of these are published on our Events Calendar in advance.

Curator talks are held in the galleries during the summer months. These focus on a specific subject or range of artefacts within a display case and are a great way of getting to know more about the collections.

Gadderie artists often deliver talks on their own work during an exhibition. These are also listed in the Events Calendar.

Workshops

Monthly workshops are held in partnership with Alzheimers Scotland. These award-winning painting and reminiscence sessions are popular. Other workshops include ‘Sheeksin’ sessions, which are informal discussions on a range of subjects. Arts and crafts, research tips and other activities are also offered.
