Come hear Dr Alan Thomson, Head of Geomagnetism at the British Geological Survey in Edinburgh, explain the history and science of magnetic measurements in Lerwick. At the grand age of 95, Lerwick Observatory is one of the oldest and longest running magnetic observatories in the world, essential to many scientific activities from monitoring the aurora to aiding drilling for oil and gas in the North Sea.
