Join us for a full day of activities and events to celebrate our 10th birthday!
Shetland Museum and Archives was officially opened on 31st May 2007 by Her Majesty the Queen of Norway and Their Royal Highnesses the Duke and Duchess of Rothesay. On Saturday 3rd June, we will be hosting an open day in the building to celebrate this milestone birthday.
All events are free to attend and no booking is required. Both the Gift Shop and Hay's Dock Cafe Restaurant will be pleased to offer a 10% discount between 10.00am and 5.00pm.

10.00am - 4.00pm | Craft activity in the Learning Room - draw your favourite Museum object, or something for the collection of the future! |
10.00am - 5.00pm | Mystery Object Display - browse the display in the foyer to see if you can identify our mystery objects. |
10.00am - 5.00pm | Photography Display - take a look at images from the opening of Shetland Museum and Archives in the lower foyer. |
10.00am - 5.00pm | Birthday Film: watch the new short film complied for our birthday, shown at the gallery entrance. |
10.30am - 11.30am | Film Showing in Auditorium - Vaila Mae: The Making of a Sixareen. |
10.30am - 10.50am | Meet the Experts - The Death of Christie Fraser with Ian Tait (Maritime Display, upper gallery) |
11.00am - 11.20am | Meet the Experts - Porfido Verde Antico, the other St Ninians Isle Treasure, with Jenny Murray. (Archaeology display, lower gallery) |
11.00am - 11.30am | Behind the Scenes - Shetland Archives (Archives Searchroom) |
11.30am - 12.00noon | Character Tour - Tour the galleries with a series of themed storytelling tour guides. (meet at reception) |
12.00noon -12.20pm | Meet the Experts - Shipwrecks, with Laurie Goodlad (Harvest from the Sea display, lower gallery) |
12.00noon - 1.00pm | Film Showing in Auditorium - Clavel |
12.30pm - 12.50pm | Meet the Experts - The Scatness Bear, and other carved stones, with Samantha Dennis (Archaeology display, lower gallery) |

2.00pm - 2.45pm | Film Showing in Auditorium - Havera: The Story of an Island |
2.00pm - 4.00pm | Live Music in the Boat Hall - enjoy some live tunes by a range of local artists |
