Shetland Wool Week Event - Dutch Gloves and Cotton Mitts from the 18th Century with Gieneke Arnolli
Thursday, September 27th 2018 7:30pm - 9:00pm
Auditorium, Shetland Museum & Archives
In the collection of the Museum of Friesland in the Netherlands is just one pair of gloves in stranded knitting, made from wool in the natural colors. Remarkable are the initials A.I. and the rather early date 1783. Could there be a link to Scotland or Scandinavia? Quite different are the long white cotton mitts from the second half of the 18th century, worn by well-to-do women. This talk will be about the search for the origins of these gloves and mitts.
