In 1970, after seeing Fair Isle knitwear on the streets of London, Chris Morphet, then an aspiring 26-year-old freelance photographer, travelled to pre-oil Shetland to record his fascination with Fair Isle knitwear. His photographs are now part of a major new exhibition, Allover, on dispaly in Da Gadderie at Shetland Museum.
Morphet’s candid photos document the lives of Shetland islanders and the distinctive designs celebrated through Shetland knitwear. His striking portraits and photography serve as a fascinating social, historical, and cultural record of Fair Isle knitwear and the people who wore it in Shetland - as contemporary and relevant today as it was over 50 years ago.
Not only did Chris have a career in photography, but he then became a very successful videographer with clients such as The Who, and has shot hundreds of documentaries for the BBC and Channel 4.
Join Chris Morphet and Jane Moncrieff, who previously got together in 2019 for a brilliant BBC Radio Shetland interview, for a wonderful afternoon of stories and yarns chaired by Jane. This event will be followed by an opportunity to view the exhibition in person with Chris and hear more about the photographs and his love for Fair Isle knitting!
