During the age of sail, thousands of Shetland seaman traversed the world’s seas on all manner of vessels, in various ranks including Master. Laughton Johnston’s grandfather, was one of those men who in the 19th century, left Shetland for a life at sea. Exploring his grandfather's career, led Laughton to explore the wider story of some of the 2000 Shetland seamen who took officer tickets between 1850 and the 1920s. This research has been brought together in Laughton’s new book, To the End of the Days of Sail and during this talk he will share the stories of a few of these men, and the adventures they found themselves on.
