Join Dr George Prew, Treasure Trove Officer, for an evening learning about the recent significant finds in Shetland!

He will give a brief overview of the Treasure Trove system in Scotland and how it functions, outlining areas of specific significance and materials handled, the personnel involved and the challenges it faces. The presentation will then showcase and discuss the particularly interesting objects which have come through the process from Shetland in recent years.

Our Curator of Archaeology, Jenny Murray, will also provide a brief introduction to highlight the importance of Treasure Trove in enabling Shetland Museum to acquire important objects from our community. Images showcased are of a few of these objects (TT16/24, a beautiful Anglo-Scandinavian type pommel; TT17/24, a nice gilded cloth seal, and TT15/24, a wonderful Shetland knife) which have been through the process recently.

Treasure Trove looks after the Scottish process of object identification and Crown claim, which covers any object that has been taken out of the ground and which is thought, on the basis of its age or rarity, worth preserving for the nation. Through this process, these objects are then offered to the public sphere through being acquired by museums and galleries.
