Winter Straw Club 2024 - SOLD OUT

Saturday, October 26th 2024 - Saturday, December 14th 2024
Auditorium, Shetland Museum & Archives

Join us for a winter of straw making to conserve this critically endangered craft! This is arranged in a club format with 3 different skills available to choose from- either knotted, stitched or kishie making. You will be asked to select which technique you wish to learn at checkout when you book your space. Each technique has an experienced tutor, Eve Eunson, Samantha Dennis and Leslie Smith, who will guide you through making your chosen project (selected at the first session).

Knotted- Learn from Eve how to make a square straw basket using the same technique used in the Fair Isle Strawback Chairs. Basket will have a wooden base - some simple woodworking will be required.

Stitched- Samantha will teach you the key techniques used to make coiled straw baskets, including the traditional stitch work. There will also be the opportunity to learn how to add handles, lids, rims and your own creative unique embellishments!

Kishie making- Learn from Leslie about this craft and make your own kishie, including making your own simmens/rope.

These sessions run each Saturday from 26th October - 14th December, 10:30 - 13:30:

- Saturday 26 October

- Saturday 2 November

- Saturday 9 November

- Saturday 16 November

- Saturday 23 November

- Saturday 30 November

- Saturday 7 December

- Saturday 14 December

Please note, if you have attended the club previously and would like to continue working on the technique you received training on, you are welcome to drop-in to these sessions. Material costs will be charged at the time should you require any. If you have attended previously but now want to learn a new technique, please book a new space by going through to checkout.
