Katie Scarlett Howard's Herring Girls
Tuesday, October 25th 2016 - Thursday, November 24th 2016
The exhibition displays a selection of Katie’s ceramic figures which were developed from two years of research. The figures represent ‘herring girls’ from the early to mid-twentieth century, up to present day. They are all of a similar scale (between 30-38inches in height and approximately 12-18inches wide) They vary in position, stance, colour and finish, depending on the glaze.
The figures focus on the fishing industry and the activities they undertook or that are undertaken today.
The work is made from Craft crank clay. This is a heavily grogged ceramic material which gives the figures some 'grit' and will be an ideal medium for the Stoneware glazes and oxides that are used on their finish.
The figures have a textured finish, created by rough cloth and fabric impressions in the clay, slip application. They have large expressive hands and simple dress to convey the arduous, intensive work the women undertook.
The exhibition will be on display in the Foyer corridor from 25th October to 24th November.
