Howard Towll: To Shetland and Beyond
Saturday, November 19th 2016 - Wednesday, December 21st 2016
Da Gadderie
This is the latest Exhibition at Da Gaadderie by local artist Howard Towll. The exhibition contains a mixture of original prints, paintings and field sketches of wildlife and landscapes from observations made in Shetland and from trips abroad including Iceland, Japan and Spain.
All Howards work is informed by direct experience, and based on a vast amount of sketching from life, and several examples of this field work are displayed in the form of sketchbooks and on loose sheets of paper. Included are images of familiar Shetland birds and mammals Eiders, Crows, Mountain Hares and Otters as well as studies of Vultures Cranes and Eagles from his foreign travels.
It is from these drawings and paintings that studio work is developed mainly in the form of printmaking and in particular woodcuts. Howard has recently been developing colour woodcuts using several woodblocks for each colour to create the final image. In addition to the woodcuts there are a few lino prints, lithographs and monoprints.
The show runs until 21s December 2016
