10th Birthday Celebrations

On 31st May, it will be ten years since Her Majesty the Queen of Norway and Their Royal Highnesses the Duke and Duchess of Rothesay officially opened the Shetland Museum and Archives building at Hay’s Dock.

To celebrate this milestone birthday, staff are hosting a day of birthday celebrations on Saturday 3rd June and would like to invite everyone along to join in the activities planned for the day.

There will be a range of ‘Meet the Expert’ talks within the galleries on subjects including a look at Porfido Verde Antico; the other St Ninian’s Isle Treasure, Shipwrecks, and the death of Christie Fraser. Visitors can take a tour through the galleries with costumed guides, watch a range of films in the auditorium or take a guess at what some of the more obscure artefacts in the collection may have been used for.

Craft activities in the Learning Room will be available all day, with live music in the Boat Hall between 2.00pm and 4.00pm. See behind the scenes in the Archives, and enjoy 10% off in the gift shop and Hay’s Dock Café Restaurant between 10.00am and 5.00pm.

All birthday celebration events are free to attend and no booking is required.

Curator, Dr Ian Tait, said “We’re very proud of what we have achieved over the last ten years. The exhibitions, events and projects that the Museum and Archives have been involved in has left a legacy that we will continue to build on over the next ten years, and beyond.
