Shetland Museum and Archives Launches New Online Archive Catalogue

A new online Archives catalogue has been launched today (Tuesday 8 August) at the Shetland Museum and Archives.

The new online catalogue contains over 120,000 descriptions of records and books from the Shetland Archives Collection. A number of items, paper and audio, have been digitised, and around 700 are available online. Users can now search and download high quality images and audio recordings from anywhere in the world.

Archivist Brian Smith said: “The Shetland Museum and Archives has impressive collections of documents, books and oral history recordings. We are delighted that we are now able to share details of this material with a much broader audience.

“There are now more than 400 audio files online, many of them interviews recorded in the 1980s and 1990s. They provide a fascinating insight into life in Shetland during that time.

“Many of the interviewees are fantastic storytellers, and it is a joy to listen as they share memories of fishing, crofting, childhood tales and general everyday life in the isles which are often told in broad Shetland dialect.”

There is also a large selection of high quality digital files that can be viewed and downloaded, including Shetland maps, images, recipes, transcripts of court cases as well as other historical documents.

Brian Smith added: “Our new online archive catalogue will be a valuable resource for researchers and anyone with an interest in Shetland’s history. It is easy to use, has a good search function and has an attractive design, which means it displays well on mobiles and tablets.

“Now that we have launched the new website we plan to continue to update it regularly - if there are any specific documents or audio files you wish to see digitised you can get in touch with us.”

The Shetland Museum & Archives Team (L-R) Angus Johnson, Mark Smith and Brian Smith

The Shetland Museum & Archives are holding drop-in sessions in the Searchroom where the archives team will be on hand to provide demonstrations of the new online catalogue and answer any of your questions. Come along and familiarise yourself with the new system from 2pm to 4.30pm on Wednesday 16th and Thursday 17th August 2023.
